Electricity at Bangor Marina

Helping you monitor the cost of electricity

In September we wrote to all our berth holders advising them of the increase in the price of electricity supplied to their boats. As the temperature starts to drop there will be an increase in electrical consumption and we have received several queries in connection with the costs involved in running electrical equipment on board.

We thought it worthwhile to put together a running cost guide for different periods where equipment is used continuously. Thermostats and timing switches will reduce unit consumption, although in winter, consumption will naturally be higher than at other times of the year.

Also, it's worth noting that during periods of extreme cold weather some dehumidifiers may switch to defrost / heat mode resulting in increased electrical consumption.
The following points should also be noted:

• The Marina is billed monthly for electrical consumption on an industrial tariff, within strict payment terms. We read pontoon meters monthly for billing purposes.
• The domestic resale price of electricity does not apply and therefore comparisons with domestic electrical costs are therefore not considered to be relevant.
• The provision of electrical services is not a profit element for us.
• All pontoon electrics and meters are tested annually and serviced as appropriate. A supply is provided to the outlet.
• The installation of electrical equipment on board, its connection to the supply and the resulting consumption of power remain the responsibility of the Owner.

The following information is provided to show the typical approximate rating of electrical equipment in use on boats and the cost implications of its use.

Approximate Ratings:

Light Bulb 5 w - 60 w
Drill 250 w
Colour T.V. 350 w
Battery Charger 500 w
Tubular Heater 500 w
Dehumidifier 500 w
Kettle 1500 w - 2500 w
Fan Heater 1000 w - 3000 w
Radiant Heater 1000 w - 3000 w
Immersion Heater 2000 w - 3000 w

Costs are based on a unit cost of £0.3618 - one unit being the consumption of 1 kw (1000 w) for one hour.

We hope that this note may assist you in monitoring and/or controlling the electricity consumption on board your boat, particularly during winter months.
