Here at boatfolk we’re proud to be supporting protect collect dispose week by The Green Blue. As part of our dedication to caring for our oceans we’ve been actively working to educate our boatfolk community about correct antifouling, promoting responsible practices and implementing changes across our boatcare division that keeps chemicals out of our seas.
If you are applying antifouling yourself never cut corners. Incorrectly applied antifoul not only gives you more work in the long run, it’s going to cause more damage to the environment. Be sure to follow the steps below:
If you’re removing antifoul make sure you only do so in a well ventilated and approved area. Place a tarpaulin to protect the ground and collect any debris and ensure you’ve got PPE (you’re just as important to look after as the ocean).
Always think about how you’re going to collect and transfer waste without it spreading. Avoid doing antifoul near drains to prevent it contaminating the water, use portable bunding where possible and use a filtered wash-down system if available.
Remember that all items contaminated by antifoul paint are classed as hazardous waste so no keeping things around for a future job! Dispose of waste correctly and legally, if in doubt ask a member of the marina team where to dispose of your contaminated items.
If you’re an antifouling novice we always recommend leaving it to the professionals or asking for advice! You don’t want to risk making a mistake that kills marine wildlife. Our boatcare crew are trained in correct application and removal, minimising negative impacts. Better still, if you want to up your sustainability game give Coppercoat a go, it’s more environmentally friendly and it remains effective for around 10 years.
