Improving access to education in Dubreka

Fundraising for URBOND

Earlier this year accounts assistant at boatfolk, Carlos Ngassa Bike set his sights on making a positive change for the children of Dubreka in the Republic of Guinea. Kicking off a fundraising campaign for URBOND, a Portsmouth based charity working to improve access to primary education and provide opportunities for children in Dubreka.

Their purpose being to improve child education and support success for young people, providing primary education to children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to attend school.

To support the cause Carlos completed the Tough Mudder race in September 2022, with funds raised going towards the building of toilet facilities for girls, and a basketball court for the local youth.

Earlier this month Carlos travelled out to the Republic of Guinea where he and a group of volunteers spent 12 days supporting the local community, focusing on the Public Primay School (Ecole Publique d’Application) where the toilets facilities and the Basketball/Volleyball court were built. The girls’ toilets facilities were handed over to the school on the International Girls Day, and the sport ground on the evening of their departure from Dubreka.

After spending 12 days helping with the various classes and workshops, as well as lending a hand wherever else was need, whether this be running a play group or picking up rubbish on the school premises Carlos has this to say:

“ I embarked on a journey with the hope of impacting lives, and ended up having mine impacted too. it is hard to experience what I have been through for twelve days in the town of Dubreka and still have the same outlook on life.”

A true boatfolk hero! We couldn’t be more proud of Carlos and his hard work and dedication in supporting such a worthy cause. If you would like to show your support for URBOND and their continued great work you can make a donation here.
