Portland's Lynx Helicopter

Securing a piece of Portland's history for the future

Last Friday, on 25 October 2024 at 11am, Portland Marina became the proud, permanent home of a piece of naval aviation history—the Lynx XZ250 helicopter. Once stationed at the former Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Portland, the Lynx now serves as a lasting reminder of Portland's rich military past, gifted formally by RNAS Yeovilton in a ceremony that celebrated this connection to the Royal Navy.

Portland Marina sits on the grounds of what was once RNAS Portland and HMS Osprey, a base that closed in 1999 after decades of service. Lynx XZ250, part of the remaining helicopter fleet, was then relocated to RNAS Yeovilton, where it continued to fly until 2007. A request from Dean and Reddyhoff founder Richard Reddyhoff in 2011 led to the helicopter's return to Portland, where it has stood on display since. Originally on loan from RNAS Yeovilton, the Lynx has been finally gifted to Portland Marina, ensuring it remains a centerpiece of the marina’s history.

The gifting ceremony was marked by a flypast by the Royal Navy Black Cats display team in two Wildcat helicopters, setting the stage for the formal handover of Lynx XZ250 to Portland Marina’s General Manager, Jon Eads. Distinguished guests included Mayor of Portland, Sheila Miles; Richard Reddyhoff and his wife, Mary; as well as former RNAS Portland personnel and Lynx helicopter crew members who joined the public for the occasion. Following the ceremony, a VIP reception was held at Salt, where the gifting documents were signed in the presence of the Wildcat pilots and crew before their return to RNAS Yeovilton.

This event celebrated not just the formal handover of Lynx XZ250 but also the enduring bond between Portland’s past and present—a tribute to those who served at RNAS Portland and a reminder of the area’s unique role in maritime and aviation history.

Another VIP in attendance was local youngster Hali Green, who was excited to meet the four aircrew from RNAS Yeovilton. Hali and her mum are a strong supporters of local events, joining us in August as a Portland Week ambassador and walking 208 miles in May for the RNLI.
