Naval heritage, plenty of watersports plus scenic countryside walks

Safe panoramic beaches, impressive naval heritage, plenty of watersports plus scenic countryside walks and historic trails, there is much to keep the family entertained.

If you need to stretch your legs or tire-out kids and dogs, then walk west (or take the bus) to the shingle beach at Stokes Bay, or cross the harbour to race around on Southsea Common. Just inland of Stokes Bay is Alver Valley Country Park, a haven for wildlife, and further west along the coast is Titchfield Haven nature reserve.

The 3km waterfront trail passes the marina, linking the Submarine Museum to Priddy's Hard and the Explosion! Museum. Cross the water to Portsmouth for the Historic Dockyard, home to the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory.

Old Portsmouth has beautiful buildings and interesting pubs, and you can walk along the fortifications towards Henry VIII's Southsea Castle. If history is all a bit much, then a trip 100m up the Spinnaker Tower should cure you!
