New faces in new places

Who's who and where? Your quick guide to Dorset's Marina Managers!

Photo above; Three generations of Weymouth Marina Managers, L-R: Alistair Clarke, Neil Bedwell and Paul Swain

We recently bid a fond farewell to Neil Bedwell, who has been at the helm of Weymouth Marina for the last four years and prior to that, Assistant Manager to Alistair Clarke. Originally a berth holder in Weymouth, Neil left the rat race to work for the marina, then under the Dean & Reddyhoff banner, 18 years ago.

Neil's retirement left some big boots to fill, but his replacement in the shape of Paul Swain, is more than capable of filling them! Skipper of the Portland Marina ship since 2018, Paul has a wealth of experience to draw on and is looking forward to getting stuck in. He'll also be leading our regional charge on the sustainability front, pushing ahead with our involvement in the Studland Bay eco moorings and other projects he has been quietly working on over the last few years.

Portland will not be left without a skipper though, with Tom Ralph's promotion to Marina Manager. No stranger to operations here at Portland, Tom has been with us as Assistant Manager since September 2020 following a career with PGL managing their sailing and powerboating operations abroad.

All a little confusing? Follow us on a potted recent history tour of Dorset's Marina Managers below!

Alistair Clarke

Weymouth Marina Manager - 2009 to 2020

Alistair Clarke

Following a career in Marine insurance and finance, Alistair was based at Portland briefly before talking the helm at Weymouth Marina in 2009. His ability to navigate the complex world of digital systems and the hardware required to make them work earned him a promotion to Digital Systems Manager during the pandemic as boatfolk strove to adjust to the changes happening so quickly around us. Whilst we often look at him in confusion as he speaks an entirely different language, Alistair's expertise is bringing us to the forefront in the digital age as we lead the way in the marina industry.

Neil Bedwell

Weymouth Marina Manager - 2020 to 2024

Neil Bedwell

Many moons ago, Neil worked in advertising  before becoming Alistair's right hand man in 2010. He took over as skipper when Alistair moved into the Central Support Team in 2020 and continued with a steady hand  on the helm until his recent retirement. A lover of nature, in particular wild fowl, Neil intends to fill his spare time hand-rearing Quail and his beloved ducks, taking long walks and playing backgammon on his snazzy new board set, gifted to him at his leaving do. Who knows, he may even return as a berth holder!

Paul 2

Portland Marina Manager - 2018 to 2024, Weymouth Marina Manager - 2024

Paul Swain

No stranger to marina operations with a career which spans three boatfolk marinas, Paul has taken over the helm at Weymouth Marina following Neil's retirement. Having grown up in Hampshire, Paul worked his way up the marina ladder, starting as Marina Assistant and then Berthing Master at Haslar Marina in Gosport before moving to the newly opened Portland Marina in 2010 as Assistant Manager. He took up the Marina Manager mantle in 2018 and has been keeping us on a steady course through the growth of Portland over the last decade.

Tom Ralph

Portland Marina Manager - 2024

Tom Ralph

Tom joined the Portland team in 2020 after his return to the UK following a career in the outdoor education industry with PGL, managing their sailing and powerboating operations in France and Spain. He brought a calm and clear head to the team as Assistant Manager (originally sharing the role with Bee Woodland) and Group Health & Safety Lead. Over the ensuing years, Tom has properly got to grip with Portland's complex operations so is perfectly placed to step into Paul's (rather holey) deck shoes! He will continue his role in Health & Safety locally, but relinquish his duties group-wide.
